Directions For Use

Directions for Use

One treatment prevents future flea infestation for 4 weeks. Existing pupae in the environment may emerge for 6 weeks or longer after treatment is initiated, depending upon climatic conditions. Therefore, it may be necessary to combine Advocate treatment with environmental treatments aimed at breaking the flea life cycle in the surroundings. This can result in a more rapid reduction in the household flea population. The product should be administered at monthly intervals when used as part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis.

See datasheet for treatments of other parasites.
For external use only.

Remove one pipette from the package. Then hold the pipette in an upright position, and twist and pull off the cap. Reverse the cap and use it to twist and remove the seal from the pipette, as shown.

For dogs up to 25 kg:
With the dog in a standing position, part the coat between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible. Wherever possible apply to undamaged skin. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and squeeze the pipette firmly several times to empty its contents directly onto the skin.

For dogs of more than 25 kg:
For easy application the dog should be standing. The entire contents of the pipette should be applied evenly as 3 or 4 spots along the top of the back, from between the shoulders to the base of the tail. At each spot, part the coat until the skin is visible. Wherever possible apply to undamaged skin. Place the tip of the pipette on the skin and gently squeeze the pipette to expel a portion of its contents directly onto the skin. Do not apply an excessive amount of solution at any one spot, as that could cause some of the product to run down the animal

Side Effects

Side effects of Advocate 250 Spot On For Large (10-25kg) Dogs

Use of the product may result in transient pruritus in dogs. On rare occasions greasy hair, erythema and vomiting can occur. These signs disappear without further treatment. The product may, in rare cases, cause local hypersensitivity reactions. If the animal licks the application site after treatment, transient neurological signs may be observed infrequently (see section 4.10).

The product tastes bitter. Salivation may occasionally occur if the animal licks the application site immediately after treatment. This is not a sign of intoxication and disappears within some minutes without treatment. Correct application will minimise licking of the application sites.

The product may in very rare cases cause at the application site a sensation resulting in transient behavioural changes such as lethargy, agitation, and inappetence.

Q & A

Q. I've used your product for years...as of today after placing the medication on my bulldog's back it has turned his fur a blackish color. My vet said this has happened before to other patients. Is this normal or should I immediately wash him?
A.

I've been looking into this, and I've not found any references to it before! I suspect its just a matter of the carrier compound congealing on the hair. I wouldn't wash it off, as this might reduce the effectiveness of the product, but I'd try and be really careful next time to make sure that the whole of the dose ends up on the skin. If the discolouration is widespread and doesn't wear off in a few days, I'd suggest you contact your vet for more specific advice.

Q. I have used you product on my puppy for the second time today. She is a Golden Retriever. It is difficult to get all the pipet on the skin and she looks like a lot of it is on her hair/fur is this a problem? I want to keep using your product but I am worried that she is not getting the full dose.
A.

I understand the problem - it can be very hard to get it on the skin, especially in a wriggly puppy!
There will probably be enough on the skin - especially if she's still just a puppy - to work, although obviously I can't guarantee it.
For the future, it sometimes helps to apply it in several spots along the dog's back.
I hope this helps; if you need more information, see the manufacturer's website at http://www.animalhealth.bayerhealthcare.com/4882.0.html

Q. I've just wormed my dog with another wormer that doesn't cover heart/lung worm and I've just found out there's a lot of it around at the moment. Can I use Advocate on top of my usual wormer which is Milbemax? My dog is a 13 yr old collie cross who likes to eat anything and everything on her walks. I'm worried she will ingest something nasty and become ill with these worms. I try to keep a close eye on her when walking but she is crafty and does it when I'm not looking. Please put my mind at rest. Thank you.
A.

Hi Sophie, first of all dont worry too much, Milbemax is an excellent wormer which does have a treatment licence against heartworm, as well as the other roundworms and tapeworm. Advocate as you will see from what follows these comments has a much broader spectrum and is useful against more of the common parasites. If you are really worried and if there are any signs of lungworm such asa cough or lethargy (easily noticed in a collie!!) please consult your own vet. Otherwise use Advocate the next time you treat your dog.

Advocate Spectrum of activity
For the treatment of biting lice (Trichodectes canis), sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. canis), demodicosis (caused by Demodex canis). Treatment of Angiostrongylus vasorum and treatment of infections with gastrointestinal nematodes (L4 larvae, immature adults and adults of Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala and adults of Toxascaris leonina and Trichuris vulpis)

As we have been slow getting back to you, you would be ok to treat with advocate now, but you would need a prescription to buy the product from us.
