Q & A

Q. I have been told that flushing my dogs ears twice daily with Epi-Otic alone can resolved Pseudomonas otitis within two weeks? she has had a recurrent problem with Pseudomonas and been prescribed various things that haven't worked!
A.

Hi Nichola, Unfortunately flushing the ears with Epi-Otic is unlikely to resolve the problem on its own. Keeping the ear clean, so that the antibiotics can work, is an important part of treatment, in conjunction with antibiotics and regular culture and sensitivity tests. However If the ear drum is ruptured ( very likely in cases of Pseudomonas) you could do serious damage by administering ear cleaner. You should get your vet to check that the ear drum is intact before administering. If the ear drum is Ok it might be useful as part of a treatment plan. Pseudomonas is a nasty bacteria and treatment can be a long and frustrating process. You need to approach this in partnership with your vet try discussing your ideas and concerns with them, you can always ask for a second opinion on treatment should you wish to, hope that helps, Susie Samuel MA VetMB MRCVS
