Fortekor Flavour Tablets For Dogs 5 mg (56 tablets)

Forektor Flavour tablets are indicated for the treatment of heart failure in dogs. The active ingredient is benazepril. After oral administration, benazepril is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and hydrolysed into benazeprilat, a highly specific and potent inhibitor of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). FORTEKOR FLAVOUR produces significant inhibition of plasma ACE activity for more than 24 hours after a single dose in dogs. Inhibition of ACE leads to reduced conversion of inactive angiotensin I into angiotensin II and therefore reduction in the effects mediated by angiotensin II, including vasoconstriction of both arteries and veins, retention of sodium and water by the kidney and remodelling effects (including pathological cardiac hypertrophy and degenerative renal changes).
In dogs with heart failure, FORTEKOR FLAVOUR lowers the blood pressure and volume loading on the heart. FORTEKOR FLAVOUR leads to a significant extension of the life span of dogs with heart failure and also improves clinical signs, notably reduction in coughing and improvement of the quality of life.
Benazeprilat is excreted equally by both biliary and urinary routes in dogs.

Side effects of Fortekor Flavour Tablets For Dogs 5 mg (56 tablets)
For animal treatment only. For oral use only. Wash hands after use. In man, the combination of ACE Inhibitors and NSAIDS can lead to reduced antihypertensive efficacy or impaired renal function. Therefore concurrent use of NSAIDS should be considered with care.
In double-blind clinical trials in dogs with heart failure, FORTEKOR was well tolerated with an incidence of adverse effects statistically lower than observed in placebo treated dogs. A small number of dogs may exhibit transient signs of fatigue or dizziness.
In cats with chronic renal insufficiency, FORTEKOR may increase plasma creatinine concentrations at the start of therapy. This effect is related to the therapeutic effect of the product in reducing blood pressure, and therefore is not necessarily a reason to stop therapy in the absence of other signs. As is routine in cases of chronic renal insufficiency, it is recommended to monitor plasma creatinine during therapy.
FORTEKOR reduced erythrocyte counts in normal cats at high doses, but this effect was not observed at the recommended dose during clinical trials in cats with chronic renal insufficiency. As is routine in cases of chronic renal insufficiency, it is recommended to monitor erythrocyte counts during therapy.
FORTEKOR may increase food consumption and body weight in cats. Emesis, anorexia and lethargy have been reported very rarely in this species.

Q & A
- Q. Can Fortekor Flavour 5 be given to an elderly dog with renal problems (she's also blind and deaf) and back leg weakness.
- A.
Fortekor is a prescription medicine, so your vet will have considered your dog's individual case carefully before prescribing Fortekor.
However, in answer to your question, Fortekor is sometimes prescribed as a treatment for some renal diseases, and to the best of my knowledge is highly unlikely to cause any problems to the back leg weakness. A few dogs do seem to be a bit dizzy when they first start the course, but its usually temporary.
If you're still worried about it, I'd suggest you speak to your vet and discuss your concerns with them.
Hope that helps,
