Q & A
- Q. why is not pen &strep not recommended for dog and cat
- A.
Pen & Strep contains streptomycin as one of its active ingredients; in dogs and cats this is known to cause kidney damage and deafness, so it isn't usually used in these species.
Hope that helps,

MyVetMeds - Q. I JUST GAVE PENSTREP TO 4 OF MY CHICKENS AND I NOTICED THE 4 ARE ALL WEAK AND SLEEPING,PLEASE IS IT NORMAL AS AM SCARED DAT THEY MAY DIE AND THEY ARE FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO WALK PROPERLY, PLEASE WHAT SHOULD BE ADVISED?
- A.
Pen and Strep is not licensed for use in birds, and I'm not aware of any safety studies that have been done - certainly I've never used it in chickens, and it does sound as if they're having a bad reaction to it. Remember, the normal dose for a mammal is 1ml per 25kg by injection (it must never be given by mouth or in food or water), so a normal chicken would need only a fraction of a millilitre. In addition, it would very rarely be used on a dog or a cat as it can cause serious kidney damage in some species - it may be that birds are very sensitive to its effects.
The best thing I can advise is for you to contact your vet as soon as possible, as these birds may require urgent veterinary attention if they're suffering from penicillin or (more likely) streptomycin toxicity.
I hope that helps, and I wish you the best of luck with them.
