During our daily conversations with owners we find many adult horses living in a fixed population, with good pasture management being dosed religiously every 6-10 weeks. This may be needed in certain horses with very poor immunity and is certainly better than underworming but in the vast majority of cases is not needed. Studying our laboratory results over several years, approximately 90% of worm egg counts carried out showed no or very low worm burdens. Using these results and information regarding the horse’s environment we have been able to decrease the number of worming treatments down to twice a year in many cases. As veterinarians we are being advised by leading parasitologists to decrease the number of worming treatments per year, the current practice of interval dosing regardless of need is unsustainable in the future. Resistance in worm populations to all chemical groups of wormers has been reported and some of the wormers available do not provide adequate protection. Tapeworm infection is also a common cause of spasmodic and surgical colics.
Practically this will involve completing a short questionnaire - which will help us with interpretation of your results. Three times a year you will be a sent a sample pouch to take a small amount of dung and a stamped addressed envelope to return it to us at the laboratory. On receipt of your samples we will carry out the test, send you the results with an explanation and the appropriate wormer if and when required.
Our aim is to make this scheme very easy for the horse owner so that treatments are not forgotten or worse still a well meaning but inappropriate treatment is picked off the shelf.
Worm egg counts are best carried out in the spring and summer and can eliminate the need for worming treatments at these times of year.
